Helping Authors Write Better Stories

A sensitivity reader for your work in progress can help make your story authentic and respectful of all types of people and communities.

What is a Sensitivity Read?

Let’s start with what it’s not: censorship. When an author or other creative writes characters who come from marginalized communities (when they themselves are not a member of that community), it can be wise to have someone from the marginalized group review the work for stereotypes, harmful depictions, or bias. Sensitivity readers help creators make their art more authentic, respectful, and trope-free.

I’ve been a sensitivity reader since 2018 and have partnered with creatives and publishing houses on over 300+ projects, including manuscripts, screenplays, blog posts, articles, comic books, lesson plans, and even playing cards!

What Clients Say

More than ever, creatives are using sensitivity readers to ensure their work is respectful and inclusive.

"I consider myself to be well-informed regarding race, gender, and sexual orientation. But after writing a short story involving Black characters, I decided I needed to find someone who could check my work. Kayla identified my unwitting use of tropes that perpetuate harmful perceptions. She also caught some typos and a couple of weak spots. Glad to have her insights."

"Kayla is one of the very best reviewers I've worked with, and with 30+ years in publishing, I've worked with more than I can count! She's everything you'd want: smart, detail oriented, organized, and articulate. In addition to her sensitivity scan, we've asked her to comment on anything she feels moved to comment on, because when she notices something, it's important!"

"Kayla was fantastic. She delivered me feedback in a constructive and honest way that not only made me think about the underlying themes in my story, but also made me realize that there is still much work to be done on my manuscript. I would highly recommend her as she is an excellent beta and sensitivity reader."

Frequently Asked Questions

I read all genres, including non-fiction, social media posts, screenplays, essays, personal statements, watch videos, etc. I do not accept stories that include rape or sexual assault. Must be in Microsoft Word format (includes in-line comments/edits and a overall summary).

YES! In addition to the sensitivity read, I will also provide general beta reader critique of your story, including feedback about plot, dialogue, scenes, character arcs, believability, Show vs. Tell, overuse of words, inconsistencies, etc.

Although this is not a proofread or a copy edit, my general style is to comment on whatever I see as I read. I may call to your attention some misspellings, but not all. I also may comment on sentence structure or basic literary devices/concerns like flashbacks, opening chapters In Media Res, etc.

No, a sensitivity read is NOT a guarantee against making a story-telling mistake involving marginalized communities. But it will point out any definite and potential areas of bias in your story. This is often tough feedback to receive, it is ultimately up to you to accept or reject the feedback.

No, I will not rewrite your problematic areas. If I identify areas of concern regarding your story and marginalized communities, I will critique and give examples of how the story can improve, but the onus is on you to do the research and rework your story.

Let's talk about your project.
